Anyone else love living in Abilene?

Hey everyone, I relocated for work and The unemployment rate is 1.4%, which is pretty low. Homes are going for about $136,000 on average. Crime rate is something to consider -Abilene sits at 160.4 per 100K. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Pros:
- Friendly people
- Lots of new development
- Good healthcare facilities
- Strong sense of community

Cons:
- Rising rent prices
- Not very walkable
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Homelessness issues downtown
What are your go-to spots? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Bought a house here in 2021 and I love the pace of life here. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I love the pace of life here. Compared to New York it's tough.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Chicago about 14 years ago. The main reasons were work and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Four distinct seasons
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are established, gas is tough.

Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
