Cost of living reality check — Abilene

Longtime lurker here, With a population of 127K, Abilene is a mid-size city. Average temperature is around 69°F, so the weather is moderate. Median household income is $62,720, which feels about average for the area. Household incomes average around $62,720 in Abilene. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Should I be concerned? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Used to live on the Fairview side, now on the Downtown side. Completely different vibe. it's not perfect but it works for me.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Charlotte about 2 years ago. The main reasons were family and work.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Affordable housing options
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are wild, gas is underrated.

Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Seattle about 5 years ago. The main reasons were family and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are manageable, gas is improving.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
