Moving to Abilene for work — advice?

OK so I'm single, late 30s, and Median household income is $62,720, which feels about average for the area. Household incomes average around $62,720 in Abilene. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Worth the trade-offs? Any help is appreciated. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from Atlanta about 7 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good schools in most areas
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited high-paying job options

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are competitive, gas is solid.

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want pet-friendliness, then yeah this place is great. But if safety matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 11 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Internet is tough in most areas.

I've lived in Fairview for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Dallas, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Decent public transit for the size
- The safety scene is tough

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Limited high-paying job options

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for families. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.

I've been here 6 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Came here for my partner's job and stayed because I have mixed feelings honestly. The cost of living is honestly surprisingly good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
