What I wish I knew before living in Abilene

Random thought, My family moved here when I was a kid. You can expect to pay around $1,106 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 1.6%, which is pretty low. Rent is about $1,106/month for a decent place. The median home value here is around $178,900, which is actually reasonable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Diverse community
- Easy commute
- Good healthcare facilities

Cons:
- Limited nightlife
- Sprawl everywhere
- High property taxes
- Boring for young people
Am I overthinking this? The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The city has invested a lot in new development. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 14 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it was the best decision I ever made. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
