Hey folks, Average temperature is around 64--F, so the weather is moderate. With a population of 33,633, Alabaster is a smaller city. Median household income is $90,163, which feels pretty solid for the area. Homes are going for about $242,600 on average. The food scene here is surprisingly good. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Thoughts? Thanks in advance! The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to Minneapolis it's tough.

Used to live on the Greenfield side, now on the Pine Hills side. Completely different vibe. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Charlotte about 7 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Winters are long and cold
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are wild, gas is underrated.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Hope this helps!.

As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. public transit used to be much established but now it's pretty good.

My experience has been mostly positive. I'm still on the fence after all this time. The only thing I'd watch out for is healthcare. Other than that, Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a software engineer, 25, moved here 6 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Highland and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Property taxes are high
3. The safety situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Highland: Great for young professionals. improving vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's been a really good experience overall.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 2 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely improving and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Homeless population growing downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
