I grew up here but left for a while. The unemployment rate is 6.0%, which is about average. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Pittsburgh, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Moved here from Baltimore about 7 years ago. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Still getting used to public transit but Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 6 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely tough and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Highland) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Downtown. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in education. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Indian.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

My experience has been mostly positive. I have mixed feelings honestly. The only thing I'd watch out for is pet-friendliness. Other than that, Happy to answer more specific questions..

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it exceeded my expectations.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a sales manager, 41, moved here 3 years ago from Miami. I've lived in Cedar Grove and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good internet infrastructure
2. Strong sense of community
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The dating scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for singles. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Miami, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $100K-$130K here.
**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

The food scene here is hit or miss. Tons of great farm-to-table places. I love the pace of life here.
