The good and bad of living in Alexandria

Just moved here 14 months ago and Household incomes average around $47,357 in Alexandria. Poverty rate is 21.2%, which is higher than I expected. The unemployment rate is 3.4%, which is pretty low. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The weather takes some getting used to. Worth the trade-offs? Appreciate any input. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

Bought a house here in 2022 and it exceeded my expectations. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Internet is pretty good in most areas.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a teacher who relocated here from Dallas about 11 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Lots of new development happening
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Limited high-paying job options

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are stable, gas is excellent.

Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
