Why I chose Alexandria over bigger cities

With a population of 14,579, Alexandria is a small town. The unemployment rate is 2.2%, which is pretty low. Rent is about $907/month for a decent place. Household incomes average around $61,558 in Alexandria. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The weather takes some getting used to. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Pros:
- Close to nature
- Active local events
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Sprawl everywhere
- Limited dining options
- High property taxes
- Lack of diversity
Thoughts? It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The suburbs are where most families end up. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The weather takes some getting used to. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely average and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Old Town) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want pet-friendliness, then yeah this place is great. But if job market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

I work in engineering here and it's been a really good experience overall. The job market for my field is hit or miss. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. pet-friendliness used to be much affordable but now it's pretty good.
