Been meaning to ask this. I work in manufacturing and You can expect to pay around $2,031 for rent here. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Let me know your thoughts. Any help is appreciated.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Springfield. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in tech. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Korean.
No regrets on my end..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's not perfect but it works for me. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Oak Park. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely tough and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (West) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are underrated and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.
