Worst things about Alexandria nobody talks about

Not sure if this has been asked before, but Been living here since 2024. With a population of 157K, Alexandria is a mid-size city. Rent is about $2,031/month for a decent place. You can expect to pay around $2,031 for rent here. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Cheers. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I genuinely enjoy living here.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a nurse who relocated here from San Diego about 15 years ago. The main reasons were weather and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good schools in most areas
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not very walkable outside downtown

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are wild, gas is pretty good.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Moved here from Salt Lake City about 3 years ago. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Still getting used to outdoor recreation but No regrets on my end..
