Algona in the winter -how bad?

We have two kids and Crime rate is something to consider -Algona sits at 388.0 per 100K. With a population of 5,414, Algona is a small town. Household incomes average around $52,542 in Algona. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The weather takes some getting used to. What do you all think? The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 38, moved here 6 years ago from Denver. I've lived in Eastside and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Close to major attractions
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Can feel isolated
3. The walkability situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for young professionals. tough vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Denver, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $90K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but it's improved dramatically in recent years. I know a lot of people disagree but after 10 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

We moved here with our family and it's not perfect but it works for me. Schools in Lakewood area are pretty good. Kids love it here.

I've been living here for 4 years and I'd say it was the best decision I ever made. The public transit is pretty good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Bought a house here in 2024 and I love the pace of life here. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want safety, then yeah this place is great. But if dating scene matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Hot take but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. I know a lot of people disagree but after 1 years here, that's my honest assessment.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's exactly what I was looking for. The only thing I'd watch out for is walkability. Other than that, Good luck with whatever you decide..
