Not sure if this has been asked before, but We're a young couple and You can expect to pay around $923 for rent here. Homes are going for about $177,200 on average. The median home value here is around $177,200, which is actually reasonable. Crime rate is something to consider -Algonac sits at 336.2 per 100K. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Would love some local perspective. TIA! The weather takes some getting used to.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Pine Hills. It's pretty good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in government. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Definitely worth checking out..

Used to live on the Old Town side, now on the Pine Hills side. Completely different vibe. it was the best decision I ever made.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 2 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into running, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a chef who relocated here from Charlotte about 10 years ago. The main reasons were work and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good healthcare facilities
- Lots of new development happening
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is excellent.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in Cedar Grove for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Nashville, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good internet infrastructure
- The cost of living scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Dating scene is rough
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for remote workers. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in South for 15 years. Moved from Austin for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is surprisingly good. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
tech is strong here. healthcare is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are growing for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is underrated - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. South schools are challenging. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Urban sprawl is real. Homeless population growing downtown. And nightlife can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 7/10. Feel free to reach out with questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
