First time home buyer in Algonquin

I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Household incomes average around $131,753 in Algonquin. Average temperature is around 49--F, so expect cold winters. Homes are going for about $324,000 on average. The unemployment rate is 3.2%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $131,753, which feels pretty solid for the area. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Growing food scene
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Poor road conditions
Let me know your thoughts. Thanks for reading. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The city has invested a lot in new development. The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The suburbs are where most families end up.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I genuinely enjoy living here. Internet is hit or miss in most areas.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in West. It's surprisingly good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
