OK so Household incomes average around $53,403 in Allentown. Crime rate is something to consider — Allentown sits at 386.5 per 100K. Rent is about $1,269/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 17.3%, which is higher than I expected. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Has anyone dealt with this? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

I'm a real estate agent and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. The community is excellent and there's always something going on.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a accountant, 43, moved here 11 years ago from New York. I've lived in Uptown and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The outdoor recreation situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Uptown: Great for retirees. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from New York, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $60K-$150K here.
**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
