Planning a move to Alpena -neighborhoods?

I'm a teacher here and Household incomes average around $47,604 in Alpena. Poverty rate is 12.8%, which is around average. Average temperature is around 44--F, so bundle up in winter. The unemployment rate is 4.9%, which is about average. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Does this match your experience? The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a lawyer, 48, moved here 4 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in East and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The cultural scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for young professionals. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.

I've been here 12 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Moved here from Raleigh about 2 years ago. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Still getting used to school system but Would recommend to anyone considering it..
