Why I chose Alpena over bigger cities

Hey, My family moved here when I was a kid. It's a a small town city with about 10,178 people. Crime rate is something to consider -Alpena sits at 585.8 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $599 for rent here. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. What are your go-to spots? Looking forward to hearing from you all. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Hot take but it exceeded my expectations. I know a lot of people disagree but after 8 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Maple Ridge. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in education. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally improving. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is average in most areas.

Weather-wise, the summers are better than expected and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

As someone who grew up here, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much growing but now it's pretty good.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is food scene. it's been a really good experience overall. Worth doing your research before committing.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are underrated, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
