Is Altadena a good place to live?

Been meaning to ask this. I work in real estate and Household incomes average around $129,123 in Altadena. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The city has invested a lot in new development. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value safety, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely improving and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (North) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a data analyst, 55, moved here 10 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in The Heights and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Affordable housing options
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Dating scene is rough
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The public transit situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for retirees. tough vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $50K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Bought a house here in 2023 and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Property values have gone down slightly since then.
