Anyone else feel this way? With a population of 3,356, Altavista is a small town. Poverty rate is 13.4%, which is around average. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Has anyone dealt with this? TIA! The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 1 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

**What I love:**

2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The walkability situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$110K here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Denver about 2 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Winters are long and cold
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are developing, gas is underrated.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've been in Downtown for 3 years. Moved from Raleigh for my partner's job. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is solid. We bought in 2022 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.
**Employment:**
engineering is strong here. finance is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's been a really good experience overall. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Downtown schools are excellent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Not very walkable outside downtown. And cultural scene can be frustrating.
