I've been here for 7 years and Poverty rate is 26.6%, which is higher than I expected. Crime rate is something to consider -Alton sits at 65.3 per 100K. Median household income is $48,777, which feels on the lower side for the area. Homes are going for about $126,600 on average. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.
