So, My family moved here when I was a kid. It's a a small town city with about 3,866 people. Household incomes average around $68,955 in Alturas. Median household income is $68,955, which feels about average for the area. You can expect to pay around $941 for rent here. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The weather takes some getting used to. Hot take but the quality of life is solid. I know a lot of people disagree but after 8 years here, that's my honest assessment.

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great seafood places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

I've been living here for 12 years and I'd say it's exactly what I was looking for. The healthcare is average compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely average and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Came here for work and stayed because I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The housing market is honestly underrated and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is pet-friendliness. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.
