Amaravati is the capital city of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is located in Guntur district on the right bank of the Krishna River, 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) southwest of Vijayawada. The city derives its name from the nearby historic site of Amaravathi, which served as the capital of the Satavahana Empire nearly two thousand years ago.
