I'm a remote worker and Median household income is $98,152, which feels pretty solid for the area. The median home value here is around $375,900, which seems about average. Rent is about $1,453/month for a decent place. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.
Pros:
- Growing food scene
- Good schools
- Diverse community
- Walkable downtown
- Active local events
Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Limited public transit
- Boring for young people
- Homelessness issues downtown
Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The city has invested a lot in new development. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a pharmacist, 53, moved here 5 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in Fairview and Highland, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The food scene situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for singles. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$110K here.
**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The food scene is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Cedar Grove. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Indian.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a chef who relocated here from Raleigh about 2 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong job market in several industries
Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are stable, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Pine Hills for 14 years. Moved from New York for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is better than expected. We bought in 2018 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.
**Employment:**
legal is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are pricey for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it was the best decision I ever made. The outdoor scene is decent - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Pine Hills schools are solid. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Rising rent and home prices. Property taxes are high. And dating scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 7/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Affordable housing options
- The cost of living scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Nightlife is limited
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. Feel free to reach out with questions..
