Random thought, Military spouse here. The unemployment rate is 4.5%, which is about average. The median home value here is around $199,600, which is actually reasonable. The weather takes some getting used to. Worth the trade-offs?

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Pine Hills. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in tech. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Asian.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to Atlanta it's decent.

As someone who grew up here, it exceeded my expectations. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cost of living used to be much wild but now it's average.

Used to live on the Greenfield side, now on the Springfield side. Completely different vibe. I love the pace of life here.

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are developing. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely average and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (The Heights) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Highland for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Diverse dining options
- The housing market scene is excellent
The downsides:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Property taxes are high
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for singles. No regrets on my end..

I work in real estate here and it's not perfect but it works for me. The job market for my field is improving. Definitely worth checking out..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's exactly what I was looking for. Feel free to reach out with questions..
