Ann Arbor quality of life — am I missing something?

Random thought, Military spouse here. Poverty rate is 6.8%, which is pretty low. Household incomes average around $81,089 in Ann Arbor. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Is this normal for Ann Arbor? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a lawyer, 36, moved here 7 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in West and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Limited shopping options
3. The dating scene situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for retirees. excellent vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's exactly what I was looking for. Definitely worth checking out..
