Hey, I relocated for work and Homes are going for about $435,100 on average. The unemployment rate is 2.2%, which is pretty low. Household incomes average around $81,089 in Ann Arbor. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The weather takes some getting used to. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.
Pros:
- Nice parks and trails
- Growing food scene
- Close to nature
- Low taxes
- Plenty of shopping options
Cons:
- Limited public transit
- High property taxes
- Chain restaurants dominate
Is this normal for Ann Arbor? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. I've lived in Pine Hills for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The dating scene scene is decent
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for couples. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in North for 11 years. Moved from Austin for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.
**Employment:**
tech is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are pricey for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's improved dramatically in recent years. The outdoor scene is hit or miss - we have biking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. North schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited high-paying job options. Far from beaches/mountains. And cultural scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 5/10. Would recommend to anyone considering it.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I've lived in Lakewood for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Lots of new development happening
- The traffic scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Limited shopping options
- Homeless population growing downtown
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for singles. Definitely worth checking out..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Oak Park. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in legal. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Indian.
