Working remotely from Annandale

Hi all, My family moved here when I was a kid. With a population of 41,982, Annandale is a smaller city. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Worth the trade-offs? The weather takes some getting used to. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Weather-wise, the summers are better than expected and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

Public transit is average here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Uptown) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to Baltimore it's excellent.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are underrated, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Riverside. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in marketing. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
