Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely better than expected and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Old Town. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Indian.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've lived in Sunset for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Active local events and festivals
- Affordable housing options
- The public transit scene is excellent
The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Pine Hills. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in retail. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.
Definitely worth checking out..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I have mixed feelings honestly. Compared to San Diego it's improving.

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Cedar Grove area are excellent. Kids love it here.
