Hey, Household incomes average around $85,697 in Arcola. With a population of 2,867, Arcola is a small town. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. What would you do? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The weather takes some getting used to. The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 2 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want community vibe, then yeah this place is great. But if community vibe matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

As someone who grew up here, it's been a really good experience overall. A lot has changed in the past few years though. job market used to be much growing but now it's improving.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good internet infrastructure
- The housing market scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Chain restaurants dominate
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for families. No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it was the best decision I ever made. Internet is underrated in most areas.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Meadowbrook. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in engineering. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
Hope this helps!.
