Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.
I've been here 5 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Pittsburgh about 15 years ago. The main reasons were family and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Diverse dining options
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Dating scene is rough
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are reasonable, gas is improving.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Hope this helps!.

I've been here 3 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is better than expected.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely average and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Westside) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2017 and it's exactly what I was looking for. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Used to live on the West side, now on the Old Town side. Completely different vibe. I genuinely enjoy living here.
