Thinking about relocating to Arlington from Portland

Anyone else feel this way? My family moved here when I was a kid. The unemployment rate is 2.5%, which is pretty low. The median home value here is around $367,700, which seems about average. It's a a small town city with about 14,989 people. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Anyone in a similar situation? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from Nashville about 12 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good healthcare facilities

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are developing, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Hope this helps!.

Bought a house here in 2017 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Meadowbrook. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in legal. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Sunset) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
