Thinking about relocating to Atchison from Minneapolis

Random thought, I'm a college student here and Median household income is $54,695, which feels on the lower side for the area. Poverty rate is 10.2%, which is around average. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Let me know your thoughts. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value housing market, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely decent and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Midtown) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from Austin about 11 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Lots of new development happening
- Active local events and festivals

Cons that are real:
- Dating scene is rough
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are pricey, gas is excellent.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's exactly what I was looking for. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Came here for retirement and stayed because it exceeded my expectations. The food scene is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 28, moved here 11 years ago from LA. I've lived in Midtown and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The job market situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for retirees. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from LA, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $60K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but it exceeded my expectations. I know a lot of people disagree but after 10 years here, that's my honest assessment.

The food scene here is underrated. Tons of great Korean places. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 10 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

If you value school system, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (The Heights) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Homeless population growing downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in South for 7 years. Moved from San Diego for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is surprisingly good. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.

**Employment:**
government is strong here. tech is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is improving - we have lakes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. South schools are hit or miss. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not very walkable outside downtown. Road conditions need improvement. And walkability can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For couples, I'd say this is a 7/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Houston about 4 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Decent public transit for the size
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons that are real:
- Limited entertainment options
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are reasonable, gas is excellent.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
