Anyone work in healthcare in Athens-Clarke County?

First post here. I'm a remote worker and Average temperature is around 63°F, so the weather is moderate. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Came here for retirement and stayed because I have mixed feelings honestly. The weather is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Baltimore about 10 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Active local events and festivals
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is pretty good.

Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. community vibe used to be much wild but now it's challenging.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a project manager, 50, moved here 14 years ago from Miami. I've lived in Pine Hills and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Affordable housing options
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Can feel isolated
2. Limited shopping options
3. The outdoor recreation situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for retirees. underrated vibes, walkable.
- North: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Miami, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $90K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've been living here for 14 years and I'd say it's improved dramatically in recent years. The food scene is surprisingly good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Happy to answer more specific questions..

I've lived in Midtown for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Phoenix, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Decent public transit for the size
- The cultural scene scene is average

The downsides:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Property taxes are high

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for young professionals. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Bought a house here in 2023 and it was the best decision I ever made. Property values have gone about the same since then.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in East. It's surprisingly good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in marketing. If you're in legal you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..
