Best companies to work for in Athens?

Hey folks, My family moved here when I was a kid. Median household income is $37,059, which feels on the lower side for the area. The median home value here is around $242,200, which is actually reasonable. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Am I wrong here? Property taxes are high but you get good services.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in East. It's decent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in marketing. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. pet-friendliness used to be much manageable but now it's pretty good.

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor recreation is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Compared to Atlanta it's challenging.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 36, moved here 11 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in Old Town and Midtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Dating scene is rough
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The public transit situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for retirees. improving vibes, walkable.
- Midtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
