Hi all, I'm retired and With a population of 23,211, Athens is a small town. The median home value here is around $242,200, which is actually reasonable. You can expect to pay around $1,029 for rent here. The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Am I overthinking this? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

My experience has been mostly positive. I'm still on the fence after all this time. The only thing I'd watch out for is community vibe. Other than that, Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a chef, 54, moved here 15 years ago from Salt Lake City. I've lived in Cedar Grove and Downtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Can feel isolated
3. The weather situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for couples. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Downtown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Salt Lake City, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $50K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Fairview. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in education. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
No regrets on my end..

Public transit is tough here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it exceeded my expectations.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is dating scene. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've been living here for 2 years and I'd say I have mixed feelings honestly. The community vibe is excellent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Feel free to reach out with questions..
