I grew up here but left for a while. The unemployment rate is 5.6%, which is about average. With a population of 8,711, Athol is a small town. Crime rate is something to consider -Athol sits at 402.4 per 100K. Household incomes average around $61,742 in Athol. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up. Let me know your thoughts. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The city has invested a lot in new development. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Hot take but I genuinely enjoy living here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 1 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 5 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Springfield) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Public transit is tough here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

I've lived in South for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from Salt Lake City, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Close to major attractions
- The community vibe scene is solid
The downsides:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for families. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. the quality of life is solid. Compared to San Diego it's surprisingly good.
