Been meaning to ask this. The median home value here is around $642,400, which is pretty steep. What do you all think?

I've lived in The Heights for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The dating scene scene is decent
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been living here for 8 years and I'd say it's exactly what I was looking for. The nightlife is surprisingly good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Hope this helps!.

Background: I'm a HR manager, 39, moved here 2 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited shopping options
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The nightlife situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for singles. tough vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$150K here.
**Final verdict:**

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely excellent and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Downtown) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Tampa, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Lots of new development happening
- Affordable housing options
- The pet-friendliness scene is decent
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Bugs and humidity in summer
