Best and worst neighborhoods in Auburn

I'm a college student here and Rent is about $1,713/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $510,400 on average. Average temperature is around 52--F, so expect cold winters. Crime rate is something to consider -Auburn sits at 393.3 per 100K. The weather takes some getting used to. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Any help is appreciated. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The food scene here is surprisingly good. From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a chef who relocated here from Portland about 15 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Strong job market in several industries
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Limited entertainment options
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are manageable, gas is challenging.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 1 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..
