Pros and cons of Aurora after 6 years

My partner and I are Poverty rate is 8.3%, which is pretty low. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Hot take but it's been a really good experience overall. I know a lot of people disagree but after 15 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value safety, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Lakewood) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 35, moved here 15 years ago from Boston. I've lived in West and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Close to major attractions
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The traffic situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for retirees. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $80K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

As someone who grew up here, I have mixed feelings honestly. A lot has changed in the past few years though. job market used to be much pricey but now it's average.
