Anyone else feel this way? Military spouse here. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Has anyone dealt with this?

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is better than expected in most areas.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Springfield. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in construction. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Indian.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've lived in Meadowbrook for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Strong job market in several industries
- The housing market scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for retirees. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 7 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
