Bakersfield is underrated, change my mind

I keep seeing people overlook Bakersfield when talking about great places to live. With a population of 408,366, it's big enough to have everything you need but small enough to feel like a community. There are tons of parks and outdoor spaces. The weather is great — warm most of the year with an average of 68F.

The job market has been improving lately. Several manufacturing companies moved in recently.

Coming from Denver, the cost of living difference is noticeable. Groceries and gas are about the same.

Can confirm the safety issue. But it really depends on the neighborhood. Highland Park and Northside are perfectly safe.

Don't sleep on Eastside. It's up and coming and still affordable.

Rent tip: look for places in October-November. Prices drop and there's more availability.

Traffic is the worst part honestly. But if you live near work it's fine.

Check out the Oakwood area. Way more affordable and still close to everything.

Public transit needs work but they're investing in it. Should improve in next few years.

For families, I'd recommend looking at Maple Heights. Schools are rated well and it's quiet.

I'd add that the school system has been improving steadily. Otherwise spot on!

Great post! One thing I'd mention is check out the local Facebook groups for neighborhood info. Makes a big difference.

Can confirm the safety issue. But it really depends on the neighborhood. Midtown and University District are perfectly safe.
