Is Bakersfield still affordable?

Curious what people think. I'm a college student here and Crime rate is something to consider — Bakersfield sits at 455.1 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 4.4%, which is about average. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The suburbs are where most families end up. The city has invested a lot in new development. Would love some local perspective. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The city has invested a lot in new development. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value safety, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely underrated and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Springfield) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Portland about 9 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Lots of new development happening
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Chain restaurants dominate

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are stable, gas is better than expected.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. No regrets on my end..

I've lived in Riverside for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by dating scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Lots of new development happening
- Four distinct seasons
- The nightlife scene is underrated

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Urban sprawl is real

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for families. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in South for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good schools in most areas
- The public transit scene is pretty good

The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Dating scene is rough

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for couples. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Highland. It's improving for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in marketing. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Springfield. It's excellent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in marketing. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely hit or miss and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Lakewood) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Chicago about 7 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Active local events and festivals
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are manageable, gas is pretty good.

Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Good luck with whatever you decide..
