What surprised you most about Bakersfield?

First post here. I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Poverty rate is 12.4%, which is around average. You can expect to pay around $1,371 for rent here. It's a a mid-size city city with about 408K people. Average temperature is around 68°F, so the weather is moderate. The weather takes some getting used to. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services. What are your go-to spots? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good.
