What surprised you most about Bakersfield?

Longtime lurker here, My family moved here when I was a kid. With a population of 408K, Bakersfield is a mid-size city. Rent is about $1,371/month for a decent place. It's a a mid-size city city with about 408K people. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Would love some local perspective. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.
