Pros and cons of Bangor after 9 years

Hi all, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and With a population of 31,663, Bangor is a smaller city. Rent is about $1,019/month for a decent place. The suburbs are where most families end up.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Uptown. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in retail. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally improving. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Southern.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been living here for 9 years and I'd say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The public transit is improving compared to other places I've lived. Overall No regrets on my end..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Compared to Pittsburgh it's solid.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value housing market, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely better than expected and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Downtown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Dating scene is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 5 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely underrated and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Downtown) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Homeless population growing downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
