I'm a teacher here and The median home value here is around $102,200, which is actually reasonable. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. What would you do? I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in North. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in engineering. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a social worker, 24, moved here 10 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in Greenfield and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Urban sprawl is real
3. The school system situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Greenfield: Great for families. improving vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 5 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I'm a project manager who relocated here from San Diego about 6 years ago. The main reasons were family and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are wild, gas is solid.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
