Barstow in the winter -how bad?

Hey folks, I relocated for work and With a population of 25,198, Barstow is a smaller city. Poverty rate is 18.3%, which is higher than I expected. Rent is about $1,065/month for a decent place. The unemployment rate is 5.3%, which is about average. The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. What neighborhoods would you suggest? There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. I've lived in Pine Hills for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Four distinct seasons
- Affordable housing options
- The healthcare scene is improving

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for couples. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to Phoenix it's tough.

Weather-wise, the summers are average and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.

Public transit is surprisingly good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it was the best decision I ever made.
