Longtime lurker here, I'm retired and Poverty rate is 36.9%, which is higher than I expected. The unemployment rate is 7.8%, which is concerning. Rent is about $828/month for a decent place. It's a a small town city with about 9,408 people. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. What do you all think? The weather takes some getting used to. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a sales manager, 39, moved here 7 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in West and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The cost of living situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for young professionals. improving vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.
