Not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm retired and Rent is about $1,123/month for a decent place. Crime rate is something to consider -Baxter sits at 130.9 per 100K. It's a a small town city with about 8,804 people. You can expect to pay around $1,123 for rent here. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Am I wrong here? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I've been living here for 11 years and I'd say it's been a really good experience overall. The community vibe is challenging compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from Austin about 13 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size
- Strong job market in several industries
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is challenging.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 7 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
