As someone who grew up here, the quality of life is solid. A lot has changed in the past few years though. dating scene used to be much stable but now it's decent.

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because I genuinely enjoy living here. The cost of living is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Seattle about 14 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are developing, gas is solid.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is safety. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Worth doing your research before committing.

I work in government here and it's not perfect but it works for me. The job market for my field is pretty good. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Public transit is challenging here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it was the best decision I ever made.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Oak Park. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in construction. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally average. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like sushi.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..
