Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Houston about 5 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Affordable housing options
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Uptown. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in retail. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Southern.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Lakewood) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in education. If you're in education you might struggle.

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I genuinely enjoy living here.
